Description: We need volunteer observers to count Gray whales, participating in one of the longest, mammal migrations in the world. The whales we see travel sometimes very close to shore as they swim through the Santa Barbara Channel from from Baja California Sur, Mexico northbound to feeding waters off northern Alaska. The survey is conducted from shore at Counter Point (our name for the survey site in the Coal Oil Point Reserve) in Goleta every day from 9 AM to 5 PM, February 6 through May 20, 2012. All observers will be trained on site by Michael Smith, project coordinator, along with the supervisors of Gray Whales Count, to assist in this very important research. Volunteer shifts are two hours, and we would appreciate a commitment of once a week for as many weeks as possible through the season. No previous experience is necessary other than a keen interest in our ocean environment and an appreciation for these magnificent, marine mammals. For further information, please contact Michael Smith, Project Coordinator: e-mail michael@GrayWhalesCount.org.
